Researchers at the University of California San Francisco published a study in the journal called Neuron showing how adults can learn to reduce distractibility. They found that aging adults can diminish their distractibility by learning to focus on a signal sound with ever increasing distractions. The researchers used sounds at different frequencies and asked the patients to focus on a specific frequency while ignoring others. The patients got better at the task and electro-physiological brain recordings showed that the neural responses to the distracters were reduced.

Researchers surmise that this outcome could also be applied to other groups such as children with attention deficit disorders or other mental challenges. It also shows that even our aging brains can learn new tasks!
