Many of you already have amplified telephones from the Cal- ifornia Telephone Access Program (CTAP). As excited as we are to promote this excellent program, there are always some of our patients who have never heard of it

Everyone in the state of Califor- nia with a phone line in their home pays a few cents a month on their bill to support the CTAP program. The program provides telephones at no charge for people who have trouble with their hearing, vi- sion, speech or mobility.

To qualify for the program your audiologist or doctor signs a form confirming your disability. You send in the form and the CTAP program mails you a phone.

If you have received a phone in the past that is no longer meet- ing your needs, come in to talk to us about it. We can send a new form into the program and they will send you an updated phone.

Even if you feel you hear fine on the phone with your hear- ing aids on, you probably don’t wear your aids 24×7. You may want to have the amplified telephone in your bedroom in case of emergency in the middle of the night.

As Audiologists, Robert and I can sign forms for hearing loss only. However, many of the telephones for the hearing im- paired include vision and mobility access through large buttons or cordless options. If you want a phone to help with your vision or mobility problem only, then you’ll need to have the form signed by your medical doctor.
