While there aren’t any brand new hearing aids out to promote in my technology column, I thought I would share a technology we’ve been fitting over the past year that has shown fantastic real world results for our patients: SoundRecover by Phonak.

a common high-pitched sound between 4000 and 6000Hz depending upon the speaker. Also, higher pitched consonants are often drowned out by lower pitched background noise making speech in noise very difficult to understand. Finally, there are some high-pitched sounds like birdsong that our pa- tients want to hear again.

The possible range of human hearing is 20 Hertz (Hz) to 20,000 Hz. Hearings aids have been released in recent years touting greater and greater bandwidth to enable more high frequency amplification.

Phonak’s SoundRecover feature is created to allow high frequency in- formation to be shifted downward in pitch so that a healthier part of the ear can respond. Many of our patients who are wearing the Phonak aids with SoundRecover immediately notice the clarity of the new sound when compared to their pre- vious hearing aids.

Realistically, a patient with severe hearing loss in the higher pitches may not have the structures required in the cochlea to make sense of a signal coming into that high pitch region. High frequency amplification can sound like distortion.

SoundRecover is available in hear- ing aids in a variety of styles and a variety of price points. The photo above shows Phonak’s latest inven- tion, the very water resistant case. Below the photo shows the new Nano, ultra small aid.

Nonetheless, we are always reaching for more high fre- quency amplification for its many benefits. The “s” sound is
