Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder is a hearing disorder that affects the inner ear and a person’s ability to understand speech. With ANSD, a person can detect sounds, but the ear struggles to send sound information to the brain. It is estimated that somewhere between one and 10% of people with hearing loss may have ANSD.
Causes of ANSD
The cause of ANSD is still unclear, but there are a few assumptions. Scientists believe ANSD may be caused by damage to the inner ear hair cells that transmit sounds to the brain. It is also thought that malfunctioning auditory neurons that transmit sounds to the brain could also lead to the disorder. Another potential cause could include inheriting genes with mutations or suffering damage to the auditory system. ANSD may also be caused by a combination of these scenarios.
While the specific etiology of ANSD remains elusive, with various factors such as genetics and damage to auditory mechanisms possibly playing a role, the impact of this condition is more observable and consistent.
Symptoms of ANSD
ANSD can affect anyone of any age, but most cases are diagnosed at birth. Children with ANSD may struggle to develop language skills due to the disorder. Symptoms vary in intensity and can appear differently from case to case.
Symptoms may include:
- Low hearing ability
- Difficulty with speech comprehension, especially with fast speech or in loud settings
- Fluctuation of hearing ability on a day-to-day basis
Since ANSD affects a person’s ability to detect speech sounds, it becomes harder to develop language skills; most children will eventually acquire language skills. Some techniques can help develop language skills, including:
- Using sign language
- Trying assistive listening devices, cochlear implants or hearing aids
- Reducing background noise
There is no cure for ANSD. However, devices such as hearing aids can help with processing speech sounds. A hearing specialist can help determine the best course of action for approaching ANSD.
