We know that limiting our exposure to loud noise can preserve hearing, but now a new article published in 2011 in the Journal of the American Academy of Audiology suggests that diet can also help with hearing preservation.
The study reviewed the diets of 2000 people ages 49 to 99 and found that a diet high in antioxidents such as lycopene, vitamins C and E and magnesium, shows an association with better hearing. The antioxidant connection to bet- ter hearing has been proven in ani- mal studies but this is the first study to show diet affecting human hearing.
More studies are needed before we can give specific recommendations on what to eat or how many vitamins to take. For now, we can fol- low the USDA guidelines on reducing unhealthy fats and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Not only will our hearing thank us but we’ll get many other health benefits as well!
